Early childhood settings play an important role in children and families' sense of connection and cultural and social inclusion.

This course is designed to build and develop the sense of belonging and engagement of children and families who have diverse cultural backgrounds and to include them in meaningful ways in early childhood service settings.

It combines four online modules and four book resources and is self-paced so you can learn to suit your own schedule.

Cultural Social inclusion course

Flexible learning at your own pace

Learn to suit your own schedule and team needs. Complete one of the four online modules, then discuss and reflect on it and your practices. Identify aspects for enrichment and use the support books to build further knowledge. Reflective questions are also available alongside case studies as downloadable worksheets.

On completion of the online course, you will be awarded a certificate.

Online course content

The course is written and presented by highly experienced kindergarten teacher, cluster manager, consultant, PD presenter, lecturer and author Anne Houghton.

It comprises four modules, each providing two 30-minute pre-recorded webinars:

Module 1: Features of the EYLF and VEYLDF; important philosophical values and beliefs; UN Convention on Rights of the Child; term definitions of pedagogy, high expectations, inclusion, inclusivity and cultural diversity, parent partnerships and parent involvement; case study one; reflective questions.

Module 2: Family structures; families from diverse communities; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families; families with additional needs; intentional teaching strategies; establishing relationships; welcoming environments; celebrations and festivals; policies promoting diverse communities; case study two; reflective questions.

Module 3: Supporting transitions; building community; developing anti-bias curriculum; supporting cultural and social inclusion; language and communication skills; EAL learners; home language maintenance; case study three; reflective questions.

Module 4: Social and emotional development; theories and contemporary approaches; intentional teaching; language learning and development; play as a language rich learning environment; educator’s roles working with EAL children, parents and professionals as partners; assessment for learning; importance of reflection; case study four; reflective questions.

Support books

Four leading texts provide insight, information, examples of pedagogy and practice, and reflective tasks for supporting children and families who have diverse cultural backgrounds. They also provide a long-term resource your team can revisit again and again.

Who is it for?

The course is specifically designed for educators working in the early childhood education and care sector to build and develop the sense of belonging and engagement of children and families who have diverse cultural backgrounds.

It can be used in different ways:

  • as part of in-house professional learning for all educators as a team
  • in small groups
  • individually
  • the support books can be shared with parents/carers and families.

Technology requirements are: a digital device, speakers, and internet access.
