Building social and emotional skills course

Flexible learning at your own pace

Learn to suit your own schedule and team needs. Complete one of the four online modules, then discuss and reflect on it and your practices. Identify aspects for enrichment and use the support books to build further knowledge. Reflective questions are also available alongside case studies as downloadable worksheets.

On completion of the online course, you will be awarded a certificate.

Online course content

The online course is presented and written by highly experienced kindergarten teacher, cluster manager, consultant, PD presenter, lecturer and author Anne Houghton.

It comprises four modules, each providing two 30-minute pre-recorded webinars:

Module 1: Key features of the EYLF and NQS; important philosophy, beliefs and theories; importance of play; brain research; social and emotional development; understanding emotions; positive relationships; wellbeing and resilience; self-regulation, focus and attention; self-esteem; social sensitivity; supportive environments for social interaction; case study one; reflective questions.

Module 2: Theories; social competence; developing social understanding; empathy and emotional competence; communicating emotions; identifying different emotions; recognising facial expressions; case study two; reflective questions.

Module 3: Professional learning; understanding children’s behaviour; values and attitudes; behaviour research and theories; engaging with families; developing a setting approach; guidance approach strategies; challenging behaviours; case study three; reflective questions.

Module 4: Accountability; values, beliefs and philosophy; core beliefs of the EYLF; ECA Code of Ethics; intentional teaching; planning cycles; learning and development transitions; professional learning; quality early childhood settings; case study four; reflective questions.

Support books

Four leading texts provide insight, information, examples of pedagogy and practice and reflective tasks for supporting young children’s social and emotional learning and wellbeing. They also provide a long-term resource your team can revisit again and again.

The course is specifically designed for educators working in the early childhood education and care sector to build, develop and refresh educators’ existing knowledge for supporting social and emotional learning and wellbeing in young children.
